"In the first place, it's not so easy even to find your vagina. Women go weeks, months, even years without looking at it."

-Eve Ensler,
The Vagina Monologues, 1998

The Visible Woman: Orgasmic Pinball is a fully-functioning pinball machine with the theme of a woman's sexual "pleasure system."

The visible signs of female sexual excitement are subtle, and the majority of female sex organs are hidden, mysterious, and frequently misunderstood. This project is designed to bring attention to the female sexual pleasure system in a way that is exciting, affirming, and celebratory.

The Visible Woman: Orgasmic Pinball is an educational tool, a useful metaphor, and an exploration of sexual expression in a culture where repression is the norm...

...but it is also a pinball machine.

This project is an artistic endeavor that speaks the language of everyday life. As a crossover between art object and everyday object, it could bring a little bit of conceptual art to an intellectually-starved bar scene, or it could add an element of raw authenticity and playfulness to a dry, ethereal art institution.

This project was developed under the kind patronage of the University of California at San Diego, in the UCSD Visual Arts Facility and the Center for Research in the Computing Arts (CRCA). The project was partially funded by the U.S. Grants Foundation.
